After the end of WWII, Berlin was divided between the British, the French, the Americans and the Russians. The Russians dug into East Berlin and the Americans and Britain were given the West. France had a portion outside of Berlin but shared decision-making with the other three. Russia was notably contentious while the allied group was desperately trying to preserve a peace for rebuilding Germany. The Cold War had begun and Russia contrived to blockade Berlin so that the Western half would suffer so intensely from lack of food, gas, medicine and water that they would come over to the Russian side for what meager rations they could get. America and Britain brought about the end of the blockade after they began to airlift tons of food, and all the other necessities to West Berlin. This is a very dramatic historical book about the Cold War years. I loved it.
